What it is
Runners and walkers pay to enter a 3.1-mile course. Shirts, a finish line, and a few awards make it fun.
Typical net: $1,500 to $8,000 (rough estimate only. Sponsors on the shirt often cover your costs.)

Tips that work
- Use an out-and-back or loop course in a park to avoid closing streets.
- Order shirts only after early sign-ups close; order 10% extra in common sizes.
- A free kids' dash (100 yards) brings in families.
- Hire a timing company for 200+ runners; for small runs a stopwatch and finish-line list works.
- Thank every runner at the finish line.
